The Nursery | Five Years Later

Five years ago, we decorated this nursery for our first daughter. Now, we are getting ready to turn it into a “big girl room” for our second. We’ve spent countless hours in this room as a family; rocking, nursing, playing, cuddling, singing, dancing, reading… Before the crib goes up to the attic for storage and we officially bid farewell to the baby years, I wanted to capture this moment in time.

Many things remain the same since I shared the “reveal” of this room in 2018. The main changes I made to customize the space for our second child were to swap out the rug, hang a pretty celestial-inspired mobile and restyle the shelf decor. I also thrifted a pair of white linen curtains and hung them in here. More recently, I got each of the kids their own small cube shelf to organize their toys. I let our youngest choose the color for the bins and she chose this pretty shade of blue! We also recently moved the rocking chair into the corner of our bedroom and put our kid sized arm chair in it’s place to make a little reading corner.

My husband and I found this velvet settee at a yard sale in 2016 and it continues to be one of our favorite pieces of furniture in the house. It’s so comfy and the kids love using the seat cushion to make a slide. This secondhand mirror made me fall in love with etched glass and I’ve since collected another vintage etched glass mirror for our future bathroom remodel. I love the way it reflects the gorgeous custom mural I was gifted by Walls Republic when we first did this room five years ago!

This rattan bassinett was the thrift store find of the century at just $5. Both of my babies slept in it as newborns. It fit perfectly in our bedroom next to my side of the bed and was so lightweight and easy to scoot closer for middle of the night feedings. Now it’s in the nursery as a decoration, but honestly, I also use it to stash clothes our youngest has outgrown until I have a chance to go through and donate/organize/store them. The gallery wall is exactly the same as it was when I hung it five years ago. The pressed botanical print is usually a little crooked because it’s in the perfect position for little hands to play with during diaper changes.

I love the star shaped ceiling light so much! It was expensive (for us) and the only reason I could afford it was because of all the rewards points I had earned back when I was doing full-service interior design work for clients. The rug was a Facebook marketplace find for I think $50. I especially love the sage green and rust tones in the border. Truth be told, I am planning to move both this light fixture and this rug down into our living room so that we can all enjoy them!

I’ll leave you with a little peek of what’s to come! The new twin-size bed frame is here, but not put together yet. That didn’t stop me from trying out the sweet fabric canopy I ordered to hang over it. It even has a little loop inside that I could hang her mobile from. It’s bittersweet to pack the crib away, but I’m excited to refresh this room for our toddler!
